Tropic Thunder Review
Ok seriously, you get an all-star cast, an ENORMOUS movie budget (I’m sure), and an appealing story line that tickles one’s comedy taste buds and you have yourself a summer hit, right?
In this case, no, not really. Unfortunately, Tropic Thunder didn’t really hit my expectations, or even had me rolling up and down the aisles laughing. Rather, it felt lost and incomplete at times, with only just a couple funny parts here and there.
The beginning of the movie, though, is quite the attention grabber, making viewers believe they’ve entered comedy heaven. But as the movie progresses, I begin to get restless, bringing up the thought Where’s this getting to? Predictably, the last bit of good comedy is with its big, explosive, “epoch” ending that salvages whatever comedy writing Stiller may still have up his sleeve (damn, did that sound kinda harsh?).
Ben Stiller did a pretty bland job with his performance, seeming to have only focused on getting “cut” for his role instead working on character development. Not much to say about Jack Black, too, as he just plays a character who goes about the movie either fucked up off drugs or looking for it. To one of my most satisfying amusements though was Robert Downey Jr.‘s performance as he portrays “… a dude playing the dude who’s playing the other dude” (In this case, a black man). It was a bold and hilarious portrayal by Downey but, like the movie itself, he at one point became dull and boring.
All in all, Tropic Thunder is just an all right movie. Maybe I need to see it again but first impressions really do stick to you.
